What Good are Digestive Enzymes to Your Health!

Who among us understands why certain subjects become "hot" news in the popular health and diet press, while others do not?  We've experienced the oat bran craze and the fat-free craze, and over the years, we've read volumes about vitamins and minerals.  There is one food substance that remains largely ignored, although researchers have been studying it and reporting significant findings since the 1920s.  That substance is digestive enzymes.  Glamorous or not, enzymes truly make life possible.  Every time we use our eyes, fight disease; eat food-perform any bodily function enzymes are hard at work within us, enabling us to benefit from all the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients in our diets.
Every living plant-source comes naturally "pre-packaged" with all the digestive enzymes necessary to help break down that particular food properly, so you would think we'd get plenty in our diets.  Unfortunately, enzymes are killed by cooking.  Since an overwhelming amount of the food we eat is cooked or heat-processed, our diets are alarmingly deficient in these very necessary digestive enzymes.

As early as the 1920s, food enzyme researcher Dr. Edward Howell reported a connection between food enzyme intake and health.  Dr. Howell spent his entire lifetime conducting studies showing that food enzyme deficiencies promote disease and premature aging while enzyme-rich diets promote good health.  His arguments were compelling.  Dr. Howell theorized that when we eat enzyme-deficient food, our bodies are forced to draw on our internal storehouse of enzymes for digestion.  But using our bodies' own enzymes for digestion diverts them from other essential functions, such as fighting disease.  As a result, food enzyme deficiencies may leave us vulnerable to numerous health problems.
As Dr. Howell was collecting evidence, other researchers were studying the issue as well and reporting similar results.  One study conducted by Francis Pottenger, Jr., M.D. on 900 cats revealed that cats fed an enzyme rich diet of raw milk and meats remained healthy generation after generation, while those fed an enzyme deficient diet of processed milk, cooked meat kidney, heart, thyroid, and gum diseases, as well as allergies, infections, and a host of other maladies.
After making the connection between food enzymes and health, Dr. Howell began developing a way to help his own patients to maintain good health through food enzymes.  Prescribing raw food diets, he realized, was too idealistic in the modern world where cooked food is the norm.  Therefore, in 1932, he developed a plant-based food enzyme supplement, designed to replace those enzymes lost in the average cooked food diet.
